Legislator Diversity Reaches New High

When the 2024 General Assembly convenes in January, it will have the most racially diverse membership on record. After 14 years without change, a 2023 special election added one more Black legislator to the state Senate. This trend accelerated in the general election this November, leading to a new high of 10 non-white state senators. The more diverse House of Delegates has 31 minority members scheduled to take office, eight more than the 2023 session.
