Democrat Justin Fairfax captured the Democratic nomination for lieutenant governor Tuesday and Jill Holtzman Vogel, a state senator from Fauquier County, narrowly won the Republican contest. Fairfax, 38, a former federal prosecutor from Annandale who ran for attorney general in 2013 and narrowly lost that nomination to Mark R. Herring, on Tuesday defeated lobbyist and activist Susan Platt and former prosecutor Gene Rossi.

CANDIDATES FOR LIEUTENANT GOVERNOR TALK ABOUT SOUTHSIDE

Just as we did with the candidates for governor, we reached out to every candidate for lieutenant governor and asked five questions. Out of those, we heard back from all but the Glenn Davis campaign. We spoke with people from the Jill Vogel campaign on multiple occasions, but by presstime, we hadn't gotten those answers returned. If we do receive the questions from either or both of those candidates, we'll add them.

REEVES' BID TO DEPOSE VOGEL REJECTED

Lawyers for state Sens. Bryce E. Reeves and Jill Holtzman Vogel appeared in a Stafford County courtroom Friday to argue over whether Reeves should be allowed to depose Vogel and others about an email last year alleging he had an affair. A judge denied Reeves’ request. Reeves later issued a statement from his campaign saying “we will be pursuing a lawsuit against the Vogels and others involved in this filthy enterprise.”

The radio station's original headline read: "All candidates for Governor and Lt. Governor support non-partisan redistricting." The revised headline states that all candidates "support changes to Virginia's partisan redistricting process." The article did not elaborate.

LIEUTENANT GOVERNOR HOPEFUL SUSAN PLATT CALLS FOR TAKING DOWN ALL CONFEDERATE MONUMENTS IN VA.

Susan Platt, a Democratic candidate for lieutenant governor in the June 13 primary, on Thursday called for removing all Confederate monuments in Virginia and renaming all highways and buildings named for Confederates. The issue has permeated the GOP primary for governor, but a news release Thursday from Platt introduced it into the Democratic primary for lieutenant governor, a part-time office tasked with presiding over the state Senate when the General Assembly is in session.
